About AlaskaLIVE

I'm a LIVESTRONG Leader for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in Alaska. It is a volunteer position with the priorities of engaging others online and within my community to raise awareness, reduce stigma, generate funding and spread the message of LIVESTRONG. I joined LIVESTRONG because I had my heart broken from cancer. Fighting to help others win against cancer mends my heart and allows those I have lost to live on through my work.

Cancer affects everyone. Each year more than 12 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer, and eight million will die from the disease.  In 2007 2474 Alaskans were diagnosed with cancer, 837 lost their lives to cancer.  The American Society predicts an increase of 3090 newly diagnosed and 910 deaths.  Cancer is Alaska's #1 killer.

AlaskaLIVE was created in honor of Sheri Stears Carrie Forrest; as a way to honor and gather friends, family and co-workers who share a common desire to fight cancer. AlaskaLIVE embodies organizations, groups and people wanting to make a difference in lives of those affected by cancer.  AlaskaLIVE is meant to include all of us and our missions while simultaneously blurring the lines of our organizations and discouraging any competition between us.

The logo depicts the mountains, expressing the strength to fight cancer.  The forget-me-knots honor those we have lost to cancer and will never forget.

We are just beginning and would like to have you on board. If you would like to be involved with AlaskaLIVE planning events, advocacy, or joining our team at local events and activities, please contact me at alaskalive@gci.net.

Thank you,
Rachelle
